I had lunch with Linda and it was nice! We had some macaroni with spinach, garlic, and sundried tomatoes, which Linda brought from Mr. Armenian's shop from across the street. Růža tried to persuade us that she too is a girl and so that she deserves at least one macaroni, but even though she tried hard, we resisted. She patiently waited for her share up until the last moment, when the leftovers were hidden in a little plastic box and went to the fridge. Well, maybe next time...

A ještě přidám první pokus o černobílou jídelní fotografii. Krom hrušek nám Pavlova maminka poslala i domácí nakládané křemenáče a maličké kyselé okurky. Obojí padlo při včerejší večerní bondovce. Tomorrow never dies. / And here is the first attempt of BW food picture. Apart from pears, we also got some home pickled wild mushrooms and baby gherkins from Pavel's mom. Both condiments were delicious, and we ate it all during last evening's James Bond film. Tomorrow never dies.

Krom spousty čerstvého zázvoru do něj dávám i celé kousky citrónu, domácí med a mátu.

I am feeling ill again. Since last week, I'm running a fever and I feel as if I have swallowed a grater. Once again, I'm trying to get better by eating very strong beef chowder and drinking fresh ginger infusion. Apart from pieces of fresh ginger, I also put in pieces of whole lemon, lots of honey and some mint. I hope to get better soon... Despite of being sick, I could not resist the challenge which arrived in the shape of a bag full of fresh pears sent to us by Pavel's mom. The results are seen below. The first is sweet and it is called The Crispy Pear Clafoutis, the second is a well-tried combination of pears, spinach and blue cheese on a bit of roasted baguette.

Další indická specialitka, kuře v jogurtovo-paprikové marinádě se spoustou čerstvých bylinek. Nasekaná máta, koriandr a čerstvý špenát přišly i do rýže, a celkem jsme si pochutnali.

Another Indian chicken, this one in marinade of fresh herbs, paprika and yoghurt. Also the accompanying rice was fried with chopped fresh coriander, mint and spinach, and on the whole, we had a satisfying dinner. My dad joined us for the evening, so it turned out rather pleasant, including the nice caramel ice cream with mint and hazelnuts. What else shall I say? Even our dog seemed pretty content, since she succeeded in her attempt to break the world record in devouring a rawhide bone.

Pak do ní přišla červená čočka a něco mungo fazolí, zbytek loupaných rajčat, a nakonec plechovka kokosového mléka.

So, a few days after the yellow chicken comes the yellow indian soup. This time, the yellow colour is to be attributed not only to the turmeric, but also to the red lentils which are the basis of this soup. Other than that, you may pretty much choose whatever you feel like to put in there. I've made it on a basis of onion, garlic, ginger, coriander, cumin and chillies, then I added the lentils with a handful of mung beans and some leftover peeled tomatoes, and in the end, a can of coconut milk went in. The only thing you must not forget is to add lemon to taste, and if the soup feels too spicy to your liking, you may smooth it down a bit by adding a spoonful of yoghurt or créme fraiche. Serve it processed or as it is, whichever way you prefer.

Since I never got round to sorting through the pics from the opening party which I accidentally deleted, here is a little gallery of details which testify that we are slowly settling in here...

detaily z bytu
detail mojí kuchyně při vaření. Bordel, bordel, bordel... / a detail of my messy kitchen in the course of dinner preparation. Yes, it is messy.

When Pavel and Růža have returned, we had an Italian week, food-wise of course. First, I made some spaghetti aglia olio, in my version lots of garlic, chillies, sunflower seeds and in the end watercress and basil. Then, towards the end of the week, I made pizza with sundried tomatoes, rocket, stilton and speck on top. I must confess that the pasta was far superior to the pizza in all respects...

Nějakou dobu sem nic nepřibylo. Kulinářská dobrodružství proto shrnu do jediného článku. Rychlé, snadné, a přesto vynikající.

I haven't posted anything in a while. My culinary adventures will thus be covered in a single post. After returning from Jiřice, I was still alone at home, yet this did not prevent me from fixing myself two gastronomic pearls. The first has a simple name: a yellow roasted chicken. The whole chicken is marinated in a mixture of yoghurt and spices, most prominently turmeric (whence the yellow chicken). In the course of baking the chicken on a cinnamon-scented onion, one adds strips of yellow pepper. Quick, easy, yet delicious.

The following weekend I felt ill, sleeping all the time and unable to function. This is why I decided to make a proper beef chowder, which, I am certain, would raise the dead from their graves. I added handfuls of whatever I found, mostly veg and mushrooms. In the end, I threw in a litte typographic detail, the pasta letters of our youth. I must say that the soup kept me going for the following week, and it has been a long time since I've been content to eat the same meal for breakfast, lunch and supper. A true tribute to our grandmothers it was.

On Monday, Růženka managed to persuade her vet (yes, the very one who kept praising her how good and well behaved she was, up until that day), that she is a spoiled, ungrateful little brat. She proved it by biting through Pavel's upper lip while the doctor was removing her stitches. Thankfully, Pavel did not need any stitches himself, and in the end, we forgave her this error. Directly from there we went back to Jiřice, where we had a nice little party with Evička, Jiří, Joska and Vítek. Since Evička's dog Hugo was there as well, Růža was confined to the living room. I must say I was well surprised when I came to check on her an hour later and found the telly on and Růža in her bed with the remote next to her. Despite my disappointment in her from earlier that day, I had to admit that she is a cunning girl. Josefínka fixed us some wonderful fresh salad, seen pictured with Hugo's feet in the background against the setting sun. What a lovely time we had... Of course, one must forget the rather terrible trip back to Prague in the morning to attend our respective jobs. Oh well.

what a little bitch she is.

On Sunday, I headed to Jiřice, where Pavel and Růženka are spending a few summer days. Pavel is writing his dissertation and dressing the orchard, Růža helps him while recovering from her surgery. I must admit that I was jealous at their calm coexistence in the green garden. Pretty much the whole afternoon I spent by recharging, read: by lying around, sleeping, and continuing in the same activity in front of the telly for the rest of the evening. Because we do not own the box, I watched it with awe, including all the commercials. On Monday, I did not feel the least bit of urge to go back to work.

On Saturday afternoon I had an unexpected guest. When I was about to throw our rubbish into the bins in our courtyard, our "neighbour" Alice slipped away through the door. We've seen each other a few times before, but this time, she seemed lost. First, I accompanied her to the door of her owners' flat, but since no one seemed to be home, I persuaded her to pay me a visit. Alice is a decent old lady and it is apparent from the pictures that this adventure made her rather nervous. Nevertheless, she did not say no to a few treats, and in the end, she even gave me a lick on the cheek, as if saying "thanks for the care". Her owners came to pick her up in about two hours, saying they just lived through a heart attack of losing a dog. It was funny - Alice reminded me much of my first dog, Cita, even though Cita was a Frenchie and Alice is a little staffordshire bullterrier. They both have the character of an aging, a little nervous, yet dignified lady, easy to disturb from their vigorously observed everyday routine. And don't they even look a bit alike?

A nakonec pár kešu oříšků. Moc příjemný večer...

When I came home from work today, the bike in my hallway tempted me to take a ride and get a bit of fresh air. Unlike on some other such occasions, I did listen to the urge, and I couldn't have done better. The little ride took me along the Vltava river and the nearly empty track with the summer sunset on my left led me all the way to the Klecany ferry. There, I enjoyed one cool sparkling Kofola on tap and headed back. Thus, I passed the Prague municipal dog shelter twice, and I really felt pity for all those very alive, barking friends grounded there. If I could, I would have taken them home with me, all of them, in that instant. After I got back, I fixed myself a little summer classic, caprese with fresh basil. And to top it off, a few cashews. I enjoyed my evening very much...

Tentokrát šlo o měsíčky nektarinky na troše bílého jogurtu a muesli s oříšky. V této roční době podobná kombinace úplně zasytí. / Wednesday morning, yoghurt and fruit variation again. This time monothematic - nectarine slices on some yoghurt and cereal. Fully sufficient at this time of the year.
A hlavně spousta drobků. Růža se nechává opečovávat se špatně skrývaným uspokojením a bravurně zvládá i veškeré léčebné procedury jako zábaly, podávání antibiotik a neustálé litování ze strany hloupých, ochočených páníčků.
On Tuesday, my planned pleasant evening turned into a pick-up service for my sneezing and coughing dog and her tireless personal caretaker. After driving for some two hours just to get her home, she manifested such pleasure at being sick and finally properly taken cared of, that I immediately spotted the connection between her present attitude and my own school age illnesses. Then, each little flu to me meant at least a week-long party in the bed, where everything could fit - from piles and piles of magazines to toys and all the food and drink I wished for. And breadcrumbs. Lots of them. Růža lets us fuss about her with not very well hidden pleasure, and she even enjoys all the healing procedures, including scarves to help her throat clear, the antibiotics, and, most of all, the constant attention from her dumb, domesticated owners.

A byly výborné! Měli jsme k nim brambory na cibuli a cizrně s mixem koření.
To improve the evening at least a little bit, I bought two trouts. When I washed the poor fish in my sink, I begun suspecting that some of those old Jewish legends might actually be true. They looked at me so sadly that I almost believed they were two poor human souls trapped in fragile fish bodies. Nevertheless, that did not stop us from devouring them for dinner, with herbs and lemon to be sure. It tasted delicious! We had them with some potato baked with chickpeas, onion and mixed spice.
