Fist item of today's post is the improvised salad I had for lunch with Linda a couple of days ago. I made it using up some leftover rocket, veg, sundried tomatoes, capers, and topped it with a mix of walnuts and pumpkin seeds sprinkled with a bit of grated parmasan. I served in children's plates I picked up at my parents' place. The purple and red ducks with golden rim evoke a range of mixed feelings in me, standing on a borderline between genuine Chinese kitsch and melancholic nostalgia for a childhood spent in the midst of 1980s.

Second come two pics from yesterday's late breakfast. To sort out the hangover acquired the night before at Piňa's birthday party, we selected some organic muesli with white yoghurt and dried apricots complemented with my staple banana shake. After breakfast, the two ginger beauties browsed through the book from which come our new soft friends pictured in the previous post.

za Zuzanou doporučuji pozornosti Čerstvě Umytá Okna (já to nebyla) / Notice the Shining Clean Windows behind Zuzana (it wasn't me)

A večer přišla další dámská jízda. Snědly jsme neuvěřitelné množství sushi, ke kterému jsem tentokrát připravila i miso polévku s řasami a tofu, pobavily se u klipů Kelly Family i u ježka, co papá.
Last night came another scheduled girl's party. We consumed extreme amounts of sushi, this time with genuine miso shiro, and apart from drinking, we had fun with Kelly Family clips and with a hedgehog eating (thanks, YouTube).

The introduction of resident parking zones for Prague 7 provided us with this morning's show. While eating eggs fried on speck brought back from my recent trip to Austria, we were entertained watching the vehicle removal service taking care of some poor soul's car parking right in front of our windows. Apparently, the owner wasn't a local resident.

Jedná se o směs čerstvé petržele, rajčat, okurek, hrubého přeničného bulguru a čerstvých bylinek, Napoprvé do něj přišel svazek kopru, tentokrát ho nahradila voňavá máta.
After I returned from Egypt, I longed to reproduce some of its staple cooking at home. The choice was made when I ran across a recipe for tabbouleh in my Good Housekeeping cookery book. Tabbouleh is a mixture of fresh parsley, tomatoes, cucumber and rough bulgur wheat, all finished with a generous bunch of fresh herbs. The first time around, I chose fresh dill, this time, it was replaced with mint. This salad makes a perfect light dinner - thanks to the bulgur wheat, it is sufficiently filling, and at the same time, you may enjoy the feeling that it's actually good for you. Besides, it looks very aesthetic, here served in a lovely wooden rice bowl from Japan (thanks, Linda!).

Here is a sample of how two single friends spend some of their evenings. Last time in London, I bought a beautiful book showing how to make stuffed friends from derelict socks and mittens, and here are the three we've made already. The whole process is surprisingly simple, and when you combine the cotton stuffing with rice, you get a genuine beanie baby. For some reason, Růženka would like to kill all of them, and, to my great surprise, I even got an offer from one girl who wanted to buy the little stuffed dog from me! Unbelievable...

Několik novinek. Zaprvé, dvě vynikající jídla, každé po svém. Výjimečnost prvního spočívala v naprosto nečekané, a přesto zajímavé kombinaci neobvyklých ingrediencí, totiž sladkých brambor, červené řepy, červené cibule a fety, to vše zapečené v troubě. Druhá dobrota byla jednoduchost sama: Magda upekla naprosto jedinečná kuřecí stehna ozvláštněná jen stroužky česneku pod kůží. Snědly jsme je bez chleba.
A few things: first, two delicious meals, each in its own way. The unique character of the first was based on an unusual selection and combination of ingredients, that is, sweet potatoes, beet root, red onions and feta, all baked together in the oven. The second meal, on the other hand, was as simple as you can possibly get: Magda baked some chicken thighs, only with a few pieces of garlic. No need to comment on that; we ate them with no accompaniment at all.

Následují dvě reportážní fota z právě ukončeného lyžařského zájezdu do St. Antonu. Byly skvělé do posledního detailu, včetně čerstvě strouhaného křenu.
Second are two pics from a recent skiing trip to St. Anton in Austria. First shows a staple of restaurant menus across Austria, that is, the Leberknoedelsuppe or liver dumpling soup. I tried it in at least five pubs across the whole resort and this one was the best. Second picture shows a (possibly) local speciality, that is, deer sausage. It tasted great, including the fine tuned details such as the freshly grated horseradish.

Sečteno a podtrženo: týden velice náročné relaxace.
Follows a link to the two galleries from the trip: first with all of us in decent, skiing mood, second showing glimpses of last evening's program. The costs of the trip include, for some, yet enhanced liver damage, and for others, broken or lost parts of various skiing equipment. (In my case, this meant breaking one of My New Skis, and losing skiing goggles. Oh well. Shit happens...) Benefits, of course, were uncountable - wonderful weather, great slopes, pleasant company of friends; all in all, a week of very exhausting relax.

Ačkoli si každý z nás čtyř strávníků vybral z úplně jiného soudku, všechno jídlo bylo vynikající, doplněné nepřekonatelnými čerstvými džusy a mým jahodovým smoothie. Dle pořadí účinkuje Marianina ovocná palačinka, Magdina anglická snídaně, Štěpánova indonéská kuřecí polévka, a nakonec můj lilek zapečený s batáty a dresinkem z ovčího sýra, sušených rajčátek a oliv.
Here come a few pics from a wonderful organic café where we had two pleasant, lengthy breakfasts in London. Although each of us has chosen an entirely different approach to the morning grub, we were all very happy with our choice. The food was delicious and came with just perfect, freshly squeezed fruit juices and smoothies. In order of appearance: Mariana's fresh fruit pancake, Magda's full English, Štěpán's Indonesian chicken soup, and my aubergine with sweet potato topped with a dressing of goat's cheese, sundried tomatoes and olives. One can only hope that one day, similar gastronomic islands will arrive to Prague, too; it is indeed paradoxical that food and drink in such quality is not only much better available in London than in Prague, it is also significantly cheaper there, in the most expensive capital of the world...

here are links to recent galleries. First was skiing in Nassfeld; there is a reason why most of the pics come from the highly designed hotel we stayed at and the Italian café just across the border - the skiing wasn't really worth the effort of dragging a camera to the slopes.
Third girl's party in London came out traditionally well. Nothing else needs to be said, only that we are going back soon. Thanks to the best host there is and let's do it again!

Yesterday, I ran across fresh salmon trimmings and heads at Tesco's, so I decided to make some salmon soup. This decision has made one dog very happy (Růža has got a bowl full of scraps, which disappeared in a matter of seconds), and it provided us with a filling Saturday lunch. The flavour of salmon was well complemented with a few simple ingredients - namely dill, sour cream and carrot and parsnip florets, and finishing touch in the form of delicate, home-made wine vinegar made by Márty. Pictured as served - with a slice of fresh bread.

S obrázky dnešní báječné večeře přichází oficiální představení mé nové, dokonalé a nejlepší manželky.
The pics of today's fabulous dinner shall come together with one official announcement: my new, perfect and very best wife has just moved in. This living arrangement pleases both me and Růženka; in short, Magda is very much welcome here at our place. To illustrate just one of the benefits of this way of living, see the photo of the delicate "yummy" leek soup illustrated bellow. We had it as a first course today, preceding pork tandoori steaks with steamed broccoli and mixed veg. Is there anything else to say?

to jsme my v Londýně. v sobotu letíme zase, hurá!!! / this is us in London. on Saturday, we are off for another long weekend there. Hooray!!!

Long delayed Christmas and New Year pics: Christmas mostly shows my dog with lots of seasonal necessities including the dead fish, presents, the Christmas tree, and so on. The New Year's party took place at Linda and Filip's, and although we overestimated the eating capabilities of the seven guests (excluding Růženka), the party was fun, we stuffed our stomachs until we all nearly burst, and in this way, we successfully entered the new year of 2008.

two more things: first are walnut crusted steaks which I made for my dad and our family friend Táňa who paid me a visit between Christmas and New Year, the second is one item from the New Year menu, that is, honey-infused bacon roll. O něco civilnější a turističtější výběr by měl brzy následovat.
Another belated update. I haven't been posting, among other reasons, because I have spent the past two weeks in Egypt. I came home with an array of culinary and other impressions, which I will try to transfer into words and pics and post them here. For the time being, you may look through a highly stylized selection of black and white shots. To avoid questions: the lens vignetting is stressed on purpose, the high contrast is intentional, too. I am aware of the slightly cheesy feel this may add to the whole, however, this time, I just felt like it. A bit more sober, more touristic selection shall follow soon.

The pre-Christmas stress did not permit me to get here earlier, and even now, I haven't managed to sort out all the seasonal impressions. This is why I am only posting a series of pics from the baking of Christmas sweets, which did not end up well at all. In my endless stupidity, I decided to store all the finished goodness in the hallway of our house to let it soften a bit, and it did not get a chance, because some good soul has stolenl the whole lot immediately. I was left with a plateful of sweets to show my friends, and some bitterness related to where is this evil world coming to. Oh well. The remaining pics show some regular, pre-seasonal cake and a rabbit stew with plums.
